Fred Beckey

Fred Beckey’s 100 Favorite North American Climbs is the culmination of a 70 year career of first ascents and features compelling writing about the mountains and mountain life. Fred’s summing up of his favorite routes of a lifetime reflects his characteristic attention to both the big story and the details, including route tips, natural history and climbing lore to engage the armchair adventurer as well as the avid climber. Filled with hand drawn climbing topos, photos, narrative description, side notes and 40 extra climbs of note in each of the eight geographical regions, this is his magnum opus: Fred’s account of his favorite 100- plus routes belongs on every climber’s bookshelf.
Fred Beckey was born in Germany in 1923 and grew up in Seattle, were he still lives. His earliest first ascent was forbidden Peak in 1940, he has been climbing continuously ever since. One of North America’s greatest living mountaineers, Fred has written several authoritative climbing guides, which include several alpine classics, notably the seminal three-volume Cascade Alpine Guide.
“As an aspiring climber I grew up in awe of Fred Beckey. His legacy from published guidebooks to his ‘little blackbook,’ set the standards for climbers who got things done. As I got to know Fred I realized his career was based on an umbridled passion for mountains and sense of curiosity that drove him to explore mountains for their hidden gems.” --- Conrad Anker
