ABOVE ALL: Mount Whitney + California's Highest Peaks
Photographed by David Stark Wilson, Text by Steve Roper and foreword by Ken Brower

STEVE ROPERhas been writing about mountains for forty-five years. Growing up in Berkeley, California, he started climbing in his early teens and wrote the first-ever guide to Yosemite Valley at the tender age of twenty-three. He has written extensively about the High Sierra, his favorite place on the planet. He lives in Oakland, California, with his wife, Kathy and still climbs modest hills.

DAVID STARK WILSON, born in Berkeley, California, has been a building designer for over twenty years and a photographer since the age of seventeen. His buildings have won awards from the Berkeley Architectural Heritage Association, Sunset, and Metropolitan Home Magazine. His interests in design and photography converged during his back-road encounters with the austere agricultural buildings of California's Central Valley and resulted in his first book, Structures of Utility, published by Heyday Books in 2003.

An avid mountaineer, David began to photograph mountain landscapes at an early age. With his newest book, Above All, David brings his unique vision to his photographs of the highest peaks of California. David lives in Berkeley with his wife, Stacia Cronin, and children, Chase and Kai. For more of his work, see davidstarkwilson.com.

Steve Roper and David Star Wilson describe and display the California Fourteeners.
Features
  • California's "Fourteeners"—Mount Whitney, Mount Shasta, and the loftiest peaks of the High Sierra—have long teased the imaginations and challenged the fortitude of mountaineers.
Photographer and mountaineer David Stark Wilson captures the treacherous beauty of these summits and the surrounding panorama, evoking a broad range of emotion—from excitement and allure to a quieter sense of peace, respect, and awe. Steve Roper, a well-known climber and historian, provides accompanying text. Together Wilson and Roper weave an unforgettable tapestry of windswept splendor, historical data, personal anecdote, climbing mythology, and the natural history of California's highest peaks.
